Welcome to El Segundo, California.
El Segundo is a city located in Los Angeles County, California on the Santa Monica Bay. El Segundo, Spanish for "the second," was the name given to the area because the site was to be Standard Oil's second oil refinery. Six years after construction began, on January 18, 1917, the City of El Segundo was incorporated.
An El Segundo native came with a plan to relocate a major world headquarters called Unocal from downtown Los Angeles. This Fortune 500 company's concern was primarily focused on the safety of their employees. The city worked closely with Unocal to demonstrate our ability to address all of their security concerns, including the possibility of public demonstrations. Naturally, it worked. Unocal leased 82,000 square feet in the Continental Park, adding 150 employees. Since then the city has had many success stories.
The opening of the HealthSouth Training Facility in 2000 brought the Los Angeles Lakers, Kings and Sparks to El Segundo. The facility is also the training center for Michelle Kwan as well as upcoming ice skating stars. Today, the city encompasses over five square miles, spanning from the Los Angeles International Airport on the north, to the Chevron Refinery on the south, to the Pacific Ocean on the west and Aviation Boulevard on the east.
The city's population has leveled off at approximately 16,500 residents, which has enabled the community to preserve the small town intimacy and charm.

The City golf facility includes a 9-hole course, two-level night driving range, putting green, counter service cafe and pro shop. A full range of golf lessons are offered by PGA Teaching Professionals. Also at the community center are over 100 classes and programs are offered in dance, arts, cooking, exercise, self defense, ceramics, crafts, specialty workshops, drama and music year-round.
Many large aerospace companies have facilities in El Segundo, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and The Aerospace Corporation, which is headquartered there. It is also home to the Los Angeles Air Force Base and the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), which is responsible for space-related acquisition for the military.
In addition to the Chevron oil refinery, El Segundo is also home to the Hyperion sewage treatment plant and the El Segundo power plant. Los Angeles International Airport is located immediately to the north of El Segundo. Dockweiler State Beach is partially located in El Segundo, including the only RV park on the beach in California.
El Segundo is a small coastline community with old-fashioned charm and the very essence of small-town U.S.A. It is conveniently located just south of Los Angeles International Airport, adjacent to the Pacific Ocean and is accessible from the 405 San Diego Freeway and the 105 Century Freeway which connects El Segundo directly with downtown Los Angeles.
El Segundo is known for its excellent school system, beautiful parks and extensive recreation departments in historic Richmond Street and Heritage Walk and not to mention Sunday concerts in Library Park. It is one of the safest cities in Southern California because the city has more police per capita than most small cities. El Segundo is minutes from Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Palos Verdes, other lovely South Bay communities. Students enrolled in K-12 attend schools within the El Segundo Unified School District. For those who wish to attain a higher education, nearby Universities include the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles.
